The Ronald McDonald House London Expansion is a transformative, multi-phased project that will significantly enhance the organization’s ability to support families with children receiving medical care. The project includes a new four-storey, 47,000 square foot addition and the renovation and expansion of approximately 10,000 square feet of existing dining and kitchen facilities. Once complete, the expanded House will double its capacity from 40 to 80 family suites, allowing twice as many families to remain together during some of life’s most challenging moments while ensuring the House continues to operate throughout construction.
The design is rooted in the vision of creating a welcoming, restorative home-away-from-home that nurtures healing, comfort, and connection. Inspired by London’s identity as the Forest City, the architectural concept draws on the idea of a treehouse; a place of shelter, protection, resilience, and growth nestled within nature. Warm natural materials, abundant daylight, calming organic colours, and carefully framed views to the surrounding landscape create an environment that reduces stress and supports the emotional well-being of families. Shared spaces are thoughtfully connected both visually and physically, fostering opportunities for community while also providing quiet places for privacy and reflection.
Guided by principles of evidence-based and biophilic design, the project places the experience of families at the centre of every design decision. Universal design principles ensure the House is accessible, intuitive, and welcoming to people of all ages and abilities through equitable, flexible, and inclusive spaces. Clear wayfinding, adaptable family support areas, acoustic comfort, and strong connections to nature work together to create an environment that promotes healing, reduces anxiety, and encourages meaningful interaction among families, staff, volunteers, and the broader Ronald McDonald House community.
Sustainability is also a defining element of the project, reflecting Ronald McDonald House’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Designed with flexibility to meet both current and future needs, the expansion will provide a resilient, high-performing facility that can continue to evolve alongside the families it serves. More than simply increasing capacity, the project creates a lasting legacy; a compassionate, sustainable place where families can find strength, comfort, and connection while remaining close to the care their children need.
