Georgina Island First Nation, Family Wellness Centre

A shared vision of inclusive, safe, and family-focused spaces has guided the creation of a new multi-agency resource for the Chippewas of Georgina Island. The First Nation Family Wellness Centre will offer a range of office and support areas for Child Well-being Services, the Child Protection Agency, and the Community Wellness Team. In addition, it will include culturally significant and prevention-focused spaces such as a multipurpose room, a cultural teaching area, community kitchen, and counselling offices.

Adjacent to the main 10,500-square-foot, single-storey building, a Sacred Fire and gathering space will stand as a separate yet integral element of the Centre. A connection to the existing trail system will further integrate the Centre into its natural surroundings.

Merging modern and traditional design, the architecture features two elongated roofs inspired by the graceful shape of an eagle feather. In Anishinaabe tradition, the eagle feather symbolizes the Grandfather Teaching of love — a sacred gift that connects people to the Creator and offers guidance on the path to living a good life. These feather-shaped structures are suspended above the building, crossing at the entry to form the primary circulation spine. Their elevated roof position allows natural light to pour into the heart of the space, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
