More than merely an expansion, the transformation of Brock University’s Student Alumni Centre is a bold statement about contemporary student life. Designed with students, for students – and funded solely by students – the 40,000-square-foot space will serve as the dynamic and engaging beating heart of the on-campus student experience.
Far from a conventional institutional setting, the Centre will feel and function like a second home – an inviting and welcoming sanctuary where students can unwind, connect, and shape their own experience. The design of the Centre empowers students with choice, allowing them to engage with the space on their own terms—whether for collaboration and connection, solo reflection, or for a vibrant social scene.
The sensory-rich environment will encourage interaction and creativity, immersing students in an atmosphere that stimulates the body, mind, and spirit. The seamless fusion of reimagined and newly created spaces will celebrate Brock’s unique history and school spirit, creating a cohesive and inspiring experience for each user.
Designed with the future in mind, the Centre will be a model of flexibility and innovation. Accessible, safe, and stress-reducing spaces will provide comfort and support, while considerations for future growth—including the potential for vertical expansion—ensure that the Centre will evolve alongside Brock’s ever-expanding student body.
The Centre’s first floor will be a buzzing social hub, featuring a bright and airy three-storey atrium, a lively restaurant, a versatile event space, a recreation space with a pool table, ping pong, and video game consoles, as well as an outdoor patio perfect for gathering and relaxation. The second floor will cater to student collaboration, through a considered mix of open and private meeting spaces, inviting study nooks, and two outdoor terraces. The partially covered, south-facing terrace supplies views of the campus’ main green space and main campus entry, busy areas for both informal gathering and formal events. The northwestern-facing patio provides a unique view of both Brock’s front door and Schmon Tower – the central visual component of the campus. The third floor will house the Brock University Students’ Union offices, alongside dedicated spaces for meetings, media production, and the university’s television and marketing teams.
The Centre will create a milestone reflective of a deep understanding of – and appreciation for – contemporary student needs, while simultaneously conveying the unique vibrancy of the university.
