An inspired community initiative spearheaded by the Town of Goderich drove the development of the Maitland Recreation Facilit, confident that its citizens could build and operate a world class recreation facility. Firm in the belief that health and fitness centres are community builders, the town cultivated local partnerships with families, agencies and businesses to help advance this goal. Tremendous community support, boosted by the participation of the YMCA during the project development phase, made possible the construction and ongoing operations of the Facility. We were on board early in this process taking part in community and Town Hall meetings as trusted advisors.
The Maitland Recreation Facility embodies Goderich’s “commitment to the development of our members in spirit, mind and body”. Major activities are visible from an interior transparent street where one can look down onto the NHL size ice pad, turn and view the gymnasium, peer upward and see the weight training and aerobics areas, or travel further along to see the leisure and lap pools. An indoor running track circles above the ice pad providing a special vantage point for activities on the ice surface.
This facility uses a unique geothermal heating and cooling system that provides the total energy for this ice rink/recreation complex at a tremendous operating cost savings. In addition, the swimming pool has been constructed using a stainless steel shell which reduces operating and maintenance costs.
