To help plan for the long-term requirements for a much needed expansion to Critical Care Services, Stratford General Hospital (SGH) needed a Master Plan. SGH invited architects Tillmann Ruth Robinson to develop a plan that would detail the location of new or expanded program spaces as well as describe the implementation strategies for the safe and smooth operation of SGH during future construction.
Working with user groups, hospital staff and stakeholders, our firm guided SGH in thinking through how existing shelled space, constructed for future use, could be shaped to create a forward-looking hospital for Stratford. The conclusion of this exercise confirmed that both shelled and new construction was needed to adequately accommodate the complex program spaces and required adjacencies. A new 3-level 75,000 sq.ft. addition was identified to accommodate the spaces used for Sterile Processing, Emergency Services, Diagnostic Imaging and Surgical Suites as well as Pre and Post-operative facilities. Existing shelled space was recommended as appropriate for Adult Mental Health, Intensive Care, Telemetry, Pediatrics, and Maternal Child Care.
To maintain the fully operational acute care Hospital during construction, careful planning and phasing of program areas was developed working with SGH and stakeholders. A construction process was developed that would allow space for safe and efficient construction, effective waste management; separation between staff and construction personnel; adequate access routes for equipment and also aligns with infection control procedures.
Following the Master Plan, architects Tillmann Ruth Robinson were commissioned to design in detail, and construct these spaces, completing the fulfilling process of the vision to implementation.
