Cutting-edge technology and industry-leading expertise will converge to address the critical need for creative solutions to transform mining waste in a first-of-its-kind Canadian facility.
The Centre for Mine Waste Biotechnology, located in Sudbury, will expedite bioleaching and bioremediation technology applications to transform mine waste – from environmental hazard to economic opportunity – through sustainable strategies and technologies. The pilot-scale Centre will pair an ultra-modern facility with business and technical expertise to support wide-ranging skills development through the investigation, optimization, and commercialization of mine waste biotechnologies.
Specifically, the Centre will serve as a training facility supporting skills development across three key streams utilizing multidisciplinary and hands-on programming, allow researchers and industry stakeholders to test and optimize emerging technologies, and – ultimately – provide a clear path for innovators and their products to reach the market. Simultaneously, it will create and support synergies between various stakeholders, including government, industry, and researchers across the entire sector ecosystem.
